PARTS OF YOUR INSTRUMENT

Since we are discussing your voice as a musical instrument, I will try to define the most basic parts. Your voice is made up of three parts.

Source of energy: The breath in the lungs compressed and sent through the trachea and larynx.

Source of tonal vibration: When the above-mentioned breath speeds through the larynx, it sets up vibration in the vocal folds (also known as vocal cords). We will use the term phonation to indicate sound made by the human voice.

Source of resonance: The tone then resounds within the cavities of the head above the larynx, known as the resonators. This includes the pharynx,, nasal sinuses and the mouth.

In addition to the three mentioned parts, the human voice also has the articulators, which include the tongue, lips, teeth and the jaw.

FOOD FOR SONG...FOOD FOR THOUGHT "Drink raw eggs and your voice will be perfect" I guess you have heard that a lot. Well singers who fall prey often come to me with complaints of vomiting or general nausea afterwards. This is because raw eggs contain salmonella which can be harmful to ones general health and cause irritation on the vocal folds(due to excess vomiting). I would not say #don't take it I would admonish you #KNOW YOUR BODY. Also, as singers we hear alot about what to/ not to take to enhance vocal performance. But here are my submissions: 1) Eat what you desire but time them after knowing the rate at which they digest(following the chart below) and when you are to perform. 2) Take foods that go down well with you. Some people don't go well with certain food/fruit types. EMMA THE GREAT!

Emma is a singer from Massachusetts,USA. She possesses an extremely soothing voice, but at first she failed to 'see' and feel the power locked up in her throat. Teenagers! Her first audition audio almost discouraged me (Clip 2) but I listened beyond the uncertain tones and timbre and heard something hidden there. And so we went to work. Talk about being focused? A ready name on your lips would be 'Emma', amidst her busy academic schedule, she would still make out time for practice and practice she did!  Today I shed tears of joy as I listened to what sheer grits and strategy has produced. (Clip 1) Whilst we celebrate her victory today, I am assured that the hurdles ahead of her career/hobby as a singer would be surmountable. Well-done Emma!  Drop a comment and share!
