DYNAMICS

DYNAMICS

Every singer must be well furnished with the art of improvisation in order to make singing not just an activity but also an experience. Now, to take improvisation and give it colour, character and modification, singing dynamics MUST be employed. So the next question would be “what is Singing dynamics?”

Dynamics in singing is used to describe how loud or soft sounds are produced. The dynamics employed in a song has the capacity to build or break the song.

If you observe the stars of today, you will discover that they have a very good, if not excellent sense of dynamics; to be regarded as a good singer, your dynamics must be used controlled and at calculated points. Furthermore they are used to give color to a performance. And note this, Dynamics are suitable for every vocal style!

WAYS TO INCORPERATE DYNAMICS TO IMPROVE VOCAL PERFORMANCE

SOFT SINGING (PIANISSIMO)
This dynamic requires us to sing very soft, almost tenderly. Now, singing soft and openly, to the surprise of many, requires more breath resistance and steady control, having in mind that the loudness or softness of a song is not dependent on the register of a song but rather on the flow/meaning and expression of the song. A tone can be sung soft both in the higher and lower register.

There are some rules that guide a balanced performance of pianissimo.

Have a mental picture of the tone you would like to produce, ensure that it is “hummy”, ringing and well centered.
For smaller vowel form, use less mouth space because the softer the tone the less mouth resonating space needed
Reduce the abdominal muscle impulse but make sure its steady in its release of the diaphragm that controls breath. The resistance of the diaphragm must be firm unlike for louder tones.
Inhale gently as excessive inhalation may lead to extra muscular activities that will eventually cause breathy and flat tone.

EXERCISE
Try singing by someone without being heard by the person, put all the above-mentioned rules to work OR try out the MEZZA DI VOCE exercise.
