THE TONGUE THING

Each time your tongue is way up high or suppressed too low, there is an adverse effect on the vocal production. Remember the tongue is a complex network of muscles/ nerves attached to the jaw and neck (via the thyroid bone from which the larynx is suspends). This means anytime you misplace the tongue, the larynx is displaced and it eventually causes a stiffening that, endangers proper sound production and causes all round vocal fatigue; also when the tongue is wrongly placed, more forced breath is employed to phonate and the easy "yawn-like" stance that is commonly required is absent. keeping the tongue "relaxedly forward" helps maintain an open epiglottis and pharynx so you don't force sound out. Forcing the tongue backward into the mouth stifles sound and pushes against the epiglottis. My advice? Allow the vowel sounds direct the tongue and not the other way around. JOG 'N STOP

WEIRD EXERCISE 3 Some Singers feel singing starts and ends with the throat and head space ...NO!  the entire body works it. When I say this they say "Coachee you are so weird"  *The full body exercise* Jog fast on a spot with both hands spread to the sides (like kids flying and airplane) After jogging for at least 15secs, stop and hold your breath, the pressure to take a breath will be much but control it. When the impulse to inhale and expel breath becomes strong release with "sh" for 20secs When breath is exhausted take deep air in(#deep breath) this helps your breath control.

CUP IT OFF

WEIRD EXERCISE 2 CUP IT OFF This weird exercise trains the diaphragmatic and abdominal muscles to expand and contract during the pause/rest of a song in order to facilitate a snatch breath to sustain/support a tone. The shoulders and chest remain silent and calm while the mid section does the work. How its done: Fill 3/4 of a cup with water ,place it in a drinking stance but let some of the water touch, and if you can, block your nostrils. The survival instinct of a human will cause the abdomen to take responsibility for the smooth delivery of air in and out of the body,thus eliminating excessive motion in the cheat region while controlling the sound/breath of singing. NOTE: Its just like using a UBA( under water breathing apparatus) to survive while deep diving.

AQUA JAW EXERCISE

AQUA JAW EXERCISE Eliminating excessive tension around the throat and neck region is a goal every singer must strive to achieve.My focus today is the jaw! The jaw is a link between the neck and the skull ,it plays host to the tongue and lower denture, and it is responsible (to a large extent) for the production, support, and control of sound/tone.Slight reshapening in and around the jaw will cause audibly remarkable changes. My #WeirdExercise for today is the #AQUA JAW RELAXER How its done: Gulp some water but don't swallow and don't let a single drop fall down!. Let it the tongue swim in it while you sing any song of your choice. Once you master the act of holding the liquid without extending the neck and elevating the head or extending the neck, feel the opening of the jaw and other sensations in the abdominal area. FOOD vs. SINGERS

FOOD FOR SONG...FOOD FOR THOUGHT "Drink raw eggs and your voice will be perfect" I guess you have heard that a lot. Well singers who fall prey often come to me with complaints of vomiting or general nausea afterwards. This is because raw eggs contain salmonella which can be harmful to ones general health and cause irritation on the vocal folds(due to excess vomiting). I would not say #don't take it I would admonish you #KNOW YOUR BODY. Also, as singers we hear alot about what to/ not to take to enhance vocal performance. But here are my submissions: 1) Eat what you desire but time them after knowing the rate at which they digest(following the chart below) and when you are to perform. 2) Take foods that go down well with you. Some people don't go well with certain food/fruit types. Personally I can't stand garlic...so study your body before ingesting anything. 4) Honey, ginger and lime should be a staple in your meal plan 3) Finally, the only thing I may say ...

LEGATO AND SUSTAINANCE EXERCISE

LEGATO AND SUSTAINANCE This is one exercise I love and perform regularly! Its a mix of notes in the low and higher octaves. Take in a deep breath (allow your lower lungs expand noticeably) then with steady pressure sound these notes (in an undetached flow= LEGATO) without taking in (a snatch) breath till the end! "O" EXERCISE

THE "O" EXERCISE These days most singers strive to sound higher than their normal range in a bid to sound like a star they listen to. This is unhealthy. Work hard to sound like #YOU .And if you discover that you sound too nasal (singing, with the nose as a major sound outlet) here is an exercise that will help. EXERCISE Sing through any song of your choice,instead of singing with your lips flaccid,forming each word, you keep it in a static "O" ,this means the vowel may be replaced with the letter "O". You will find out that the sound, becomes heavy regardless of the key or octave. This exercise helps relax the jaw,the soft palate and the tongue, preparing it for proper balanced singing. You can also apply a slight pouting in your mouth space to enrich your sound in performance. Try it now and comment below!
